Most of the places within ten miles of the studio are residential towns with a commercial strip attached. Aurora is not one of them. It has an actual downtown along the Fox River with a theatre at the centre of it, an industrial and logistics base that employs at scale, a major hospital, and neighbourhoods with their own commercial districts and their own languages.

That variety shows up in who books. In a single month it can be a restaurant owner, a plant manager, a paediatric practice, a musician, a nonprofit director and an insurance agency — none of whom want the same photograph, and none of whom are served by a template.

It also means the register matters more here than in a corporate suburb. A photograph that reads as expensive can work against a business whose customers are its neighbours.

A large share of Aurora's commercial life is owner-operated, often across generations, and frequently with no photograph of the owner anywhere. The website has a picture of the storefront and a phone number, and the person who actually built the thing is invisible on it.

For those businesses the highest-value session is rarely a lone headshot. It is a short branding session covering the owner, the work being done, and the space — the frames that turn a listing into somewhere a person decided to go. A restaurant with a photograph of the person who cooks is a materially different proposition to one without.

Manufacturing and trades are their own case. Plant and workshop environments photograph extremely well — real light, real scale, real texture — and almost nobody in the sector is using that. Safety requirements and site rules are agreed with the operator before any visit.

The hospital campus and the practices around it generate a steady stream of clinician portraits, and they run the same way clinical sessions run everywhere: short scheduled slots, a small set-up, and complete discipline about what appears in frame. At the other end of the register, Aurora's arts community — performers, musicians, dancers, teachers — needs something closer to editorial than corporate. Those sessions allow far more texture, colour and personality than a professional portrait would, and a photograph that looks like everyone else's is a worse outcome in that field than an unconventional one.

Both are photographed regularly. They are simply different jobs, planned differently, and it is worth saying which one you are booking.
