Sessions and Headshot Pricing

There are two sessions and one quoted service. The Headshot Session is $200 for a 30-minute sitting and one professionally retouched image. The Branding Collection starts at $500 for a one-hour session and ten retouched images. Both are delivered within one week.

The hour is the session. Kay books a longer slot than that on purpose, so an hour of photography never turns into fifty minutes of photography and ten minutes of running late.

What can you do with the photographs?

Your images are yours to use for your business — website, LinkedIn, press, print, and marketing. Kay keeps the copyright and may show the work in her portfolio.

That is the whole arrangement, and it is worth reading twice because it is more generous than it sounds. There is no per-use licence, no separate fee for putting a portrait on a press page, and no expiry date. The one thing it does not cover is reselling the photographs themselves.

Everything else is confirmed in writing before you book: the session length, the number of final images, the location, the editing, the delivery, the usage and the final price. Nothing is priced after the fact — if a session needs something that changes the number, it is quoted before the day rather than added to an invoice after it.

Which session do you actually need?

The honest test is how many places the photograph has to work.

  • One place — a LinkedIn profile, a firm bio, a hospital directory, a conference programme. That is a headshot session, and spending more would not improve the outcome. If you later want a second frame from the same sitting, retouched images are $50 each.
  • A website, plus profiles, plus a press page, plus marketing — that is the Branding Collection and its ten retouched images, because those are four different photographs and buying them one at a time costs more than buying them in a day.
  • A whole team, department, firm or brokerage — that is a quoted team session, and the per-person cost is the lowest of the three.

If you describe what you need, you will be told which one fits — including when the cheaper one is the right answer.

Why the prices are published at all

Most photographers in this market do not publish a number, and there is a defensible reason for it: the work genuinely varies, and one figure would misrepresent both ends of it. There is also a less defensible reason, which is that withholding a price forces an enquiry.

It works, in the sense that it produces conversations. It also filters out everyone unwilling to start a conversation just to find out whether something is affordable — which is most people, most of the time.

A published starting price costs a few enquiries and saves everybody the ones that were never going to work. The guide to what headshots cost goes further into what drives the number in this market.
